When the economies of nations fail, when famine and other disasters prevent people from buying food in the stores, the Saints must be prepared to handle these emergencies. Ezra Taft Benson

Family Preparedness:

We are going to start putting together our emergency car kits. Especially for those of you who will be experiencing winter conditions soon, or disasters in your area, or for whatever you will need.

So, for this week, your task is to get a bin, box, or bag of some kind that you will keep in the trunk of each vehicle. Put in this kit one extra pair of clothing and one blanket for now. Next week we will start gathering other supplies.

Social Preparedness:

How can I help my children fulfill their divine potential? Think about this. Dig deep and see what you can help them figure out, guide them.

Financial Preparedness:

We encourage you wherever you may live in the world, to prepare for adversity by looking to the condition of your finances. We urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt … If you have paid your debts and have a financial reserve, even though it be small, you and your family will feel more secure and enjoy greater peace in your hearts. Emergency Kits & Food:

Let’s talk about what foods might go into a 72 hour emergency kit. First thing is remember that this is emergency food. This could include things like cup a soups, juice boxes, hot chocolate packages, protein bars, beef jerky, pepperoni sticks, cans of chili or soups, granola bars, hard candies, gum, packaged oatmeal, trail mixes, water bottles fruit roll ups, crackers or the cheese and cracker packages, fruit cups, pudding cups, and things like this. Each six months you will rotate the foods, so have a fun family night and eat it, replacing what you do eat. It will fun to decide you like something or don’t, and you will be able to fill in any gaps.

Remember these kits are survival. They are not meant to be gourmet foods, but easy to prepare and a little bit of comfort. Make it fun! Put in it things that would normally be a treat! Just because it is an emergency situation, doesn’t mean you have to eat the survival food bars that taste like yuck! You will have enough on your mind with the emergency, so make eating as pleasurable as possible!
